Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha spoke to the Italian state media, RAI, in an investigative documentary about the Rama-Meloni agreement for the establishment of refugee camps in Albania.

Berisha emphasized in the interview that he is under political arrest.

Further, he spoke about the refugee agreement, which he said he opposed because of the violation of human rights.

Excerpt from the interview:

"Yes. I am under house arrest for a totally political process. I am not accused of corruption, but I was put under investigation, but for political reasons, for Edi Rama's fear of the return of Sali Berisha and for adopting these measures". These are the words that the democratic leader, Sali Berisha, said in the "Report" program of RAI 3 and that dealt with the issue of the Rama-Meloni agreement for immigrants.

The documentary raised the concern that the millions thrown by the Italian government could go to waste since if the opposition comes to power it will not renew the agreement after 5 years when it expires.

"I opposed this agreement on the human rights issue. You cannot accept that Albanian or Italian policemen are guardians of human rights. No. These camps should have been supervised by parliamentarians, by the UN... My government will not accept this agreement. Maybe the Italian government is not happy with this, but this needs to be clarified" - says Berisha.
