Matteo Messina Denaro is in an irreversible coma. The Cosa Nostra boss, who was arrested in January after 30 years on the run, has been suffering from colon cancer for years. According to the Italian media, the doctors say that he has no hope of recovery. Also, at the request of the 61-year-old himself, the doctors removed the devices that keep him alive.

At the beginning of August, Messina Denaro underwent an intestinal intervention at the San Salvatore hospital in Aquila. While the operation was successful, the advance of the cancer led to the irreversible deterioration of his health. According to what he writes HANDLE, on Friday Messina Denaro suffered a haemorrhage and shortly afterwards fell into an irreversible coma.

Messina Denaro disappeared in 1993 and for 3 decades was one of the most wanted men in Italy. He was arrested in January at a private clinic in Palermo where he was going to treat cancer, under a false identity.

The head of Cosa Nostra has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in a series of mafia murders and bombings in Italy. Among the crimes is the murder of anti-mafia prosecutors, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, in 1992. In addition to the assassinations, he is also accused of being involved in the mafia attacks in Rome, Milan and Florence in 1993, where a total of 10 people were killed.

Messina Denaro was considered a close associate of mafia bosses Bernardo Provenzano and Salvatore "Toto" Riina./tvklan.al
