fire breaks out in the battery factory in South Korea, 20 dead

About 20 people were found dead after a fire that broke out in a battery factory in South Korea, Yonhap news agency reported.

The fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. local time at a lithium battery manufacturing plant in Hwaseong, south of the capital Seoul, according to South Korea's interior ministry.

South Korea is a major producer of lithium batteries, which are used in many items from electric vehicles to laptops.

As lithium fire can react violently with water, firefighters had to use dry sand to extinguish the flames, which took several hours to bring under control.

Lithium batteries are at risk of exploding if damaged or overheated. While a fire may be extinguished, it remains at risk of rekindling without warning due to the chemical reaction.
