At least six children were killed during the operation to execute ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi in Syria. The latter blew itself up during the attack of the American army.
Sources on the ground reported at least 13 casualties during the raid, including six children and four women, according to the Syrian civil defense group the White Helmets. Meanwhile, UNICEF also confirmed the news about the children's death.
"UNICEF confirms that at least six children were killed and a girl was seriously injured overnight in the border town [Atme] in northwestern Syria due to severe violence," said Bertrand Bainvel, Acting Regional Director of UNICEF.
Before Joe Biden spoke, administration officials gave a briefing on the direction of the raid and how it unfolded inside the White House.
A senior official said: This is an operation that has been long in the planning and tactically it has gone exactly as expected. Biden gave the final green light for the operation on Tuesday, but it had been planned for months. After the first intelligence tipped off the whereabouts of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi late last year, the president approved a capture-or-kill operation. US forces were aware that civilian families had moved to the first floor of the building to act as human shields, and one of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi's lieutenants and his family lived on the second floor. From an analysis of the building, American officials were convinced that even if Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi blew up the third floor, the entire building would not collapse.
