Iran lost badly against England on Monday in a crucial World Cup match. 6-2 was the final result in favor of "3 Lions". But excuses for this loss have started in Tehran.

The local media have blamed the protests against the Islamic Republic that started on September 16, after the killing of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini by the morality police. Iranian newspapers have accused foreign enemies, including the US, Britain, Israel, of inciting the protests with the sole aim of eliminating the national team.

"Iran – 2; England, Israel, Saudi Arabia and traitors - 6". was written in the main news of Kayhan daily. The newspaper, whose director is appointed by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Iran's defeat came after "several weeks of unprecedented and unfair psychological warfare against the team... by domestic and foreign traitors". There was added that one "political media stream" has asked to "hurt the spirit of the Iran team by attacking them."

But during Monday's match, Iranian fans chanted Amin's name, held T-shirts and banners with protest slogans and whistled the national anthem. In Iran, it is estimated that at least 419 people have lost their lives since the outbreak of protests.

Meanwhile, during the match that was played on Monday, it was reported that in the streets of Tehran, citizens burst into cheers when England scored, while at the end of the match, drivers honked their horns in celebration./tvklan.al
