Before the accession, the six Balkan states remove the borders
Slovenia and the Czech Republic are expected to propose to EU member states to offer the region the prospect of Schengen Area membership to the Balkan states before they are politically part of the European family.
The expansion of the European Union to include the countries of the Western Balkans is a complex process that will take a long time, but until then, let's remove the borders between them and the EU, stated Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.
"Why are we not talking about Schengen? Expanding Schengen is much easier than expanding the European Union. For the sake of Europe's security, we should also include the Western Balkan countries in Schengen if they meet the conditions. First it should be Serbia, as it is on the path of illegal migration and is actively fighting against illegal refugees".
According to Babiš, the expansion of the Schengen Area would significantly help to stop illegal migration. The Czech Prime Minister also reiterated that apart from the EU member states, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania, Serbia should also be admitted to the Schengen Area.
Babiš stated that the current system is not working. When asked if he had to choose between state borders and Schengen, he replied that he would choose state borders.
Babiš considers it "absurd" that, for example, Bulgaria has waited ten years to be included in Schengen, "while guarding the border better" than some Schengen countries.
"Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša has promised to propose this as a topic for discussion at the next informal meeting of the European Council on October 6.,” Babiš added.
Slovenia currently holds the presidency of the EU Council, and its priority is the enlargement of the EU to include the Western Balkans.
