Prime Minister Mario Draghi said his country would impose further sanctions on Russia
Italy has declared a state of emergency due to the consequences of Russian aggression on Ukraine. This situation is expected to last until December 31, 2022 according to a decree approved by the Council of Ministers.
In detail, the decree considers the possibility of an influx of 250 refugees who may come from Ukraine to Italy. It also provides for the sending of soldiers and military vehicles to NATO's eastern front, as well as funds for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced that there will be further sanctions against Russia. The former president of the European Central Bank said he wanted to increase the pressure on the Russian Central Bank.
"Italy is ready for other sanctions, if they are necessary. In particular, I have proposed that measures be taken to target the oligarchs. The idea is to create an international public registry of those with assets over 10 million Euros. I also proposed to further intensify the pressure on the Russian Central Bank and ask the Bank for International Settlements, which is based in Switzerland, to participate in the sanctions.
Draghi also condemned Russian threats regarding its nuclear weapons.
"The threats made by Russia saying that anyone who dares to prevent the invasion of Ukraine will pay with 'consequences never seen in history', and the extreme blackmail of using nuclear weapons, requires a swift and united response." .
Draghi said it is vital that Europe does not allow Russian aggression to win. He underlined that the European Union should spend more on defense as the Russian attack is a turning point in European history.
