Albania's population has recorded the highest decline in three years, since the pandemic period, shrinking by 1.1%, or 31.8 thousand people less.
According to INSTAT, the population of Albania on January 1, 2023 is 2.761.785 inhabitants, decreasing by 1,1%, compared to January 1, 2022.
The decline came as a result of the flight of a part of the population to emigration, while fewer people returned.
On the other hand, the population is not increasing naturally, as the number of deaths is almost the same as the number of births. During 2022, the natural increase of the population (births-deaths) recorded 690 more births than deaths, which is the lowest historical level, except for the pandemic period.
The number of immigrants was 46.460 people: 10,5% more, compared to 2021.
There are not only runaways, as it turns out that the people who return to the country are also adults. The number of immigrants in 2022 was 13.963 people: 51,9% more, compared to the previous year.
According to INSTAT, net migration (the difference between immigrants and emigrants) marked a slight improvement, compared to the previous year: from -32.853 to -32.497 inhabitants in 2022.
Albania is aging further, half of the population is over 38.8 years old
The emigration of the population, mainly at a young age, and the decline in births are leading to an increase in the median age, which is the age that divides the population in half.
According to INSTAT, On January 1, 2023, the median age of the population is 38,8 years old from 38,2 on January 1, 2022, which means that half of the country's population is under 38.8 years old and half is over this age.
On January 1, 2023, the youth dependency ratio (the ratio of the population aged 0-14 to the population aged 15-64) decreased, compared to January 1, 2022: from 24,0% to 23,8%, while the dependency ratio of the elderly (the ratio of the population 65+ to the population 15-64 years old) increased: from 23,1% to 24,4% during the same period.
The gender ratio of the total population on January 1, 2023 has decreased, compared to January 1, 2022: from 98,6 to 98,0 males for 100 females.
The gender ratio at birth suffered a slight decrease, marking the value of 107,4 in 2022, from 107,6 in 2021.
During 2022, 24.688 babies were born, suffering a decrease of 9,3%, compared to the previous year. The number of deaths in 2022 was 23.998 people, suffering a decrease of 21,3%, compared to the previous year.
In 2022, the number of immigrants was 46.460 people: 10,5% more, compared to 2021.
The number of immigrants was 13.963 people: 51,9% more, compared to the previous year.
Tirana, Durres and Fieri have the highest weight in the total population.
On January 1, 2023, Tirana occupies about 33,5% of the total population, continuing to be one of the most populated counties in the country, followed by Durrës and Fieri with 10,5% and 9,8% respectively.
As for the other counties, five of them occupy respectively from 1,9% to 4,1% of the total population.
On January 1, 2023, the population increased only in one district of the country
Population estimates on January 1, 2023 show that only one district of the country recorded an increase in population, compared to the previous year, while the other eleven districts recorded a decrease in population. The increase was noted in Tirana (+ 0,6%).
In contrast, the largest population decreases were recorded in the counties of Gjirokastër (- 3,6%), Berat (- 3,1%) and Dibër (- 2,9%).
The district with the highest dependency ratio of young people is Kukësi (33,7%), while the district with the highest dependency ratio of the elderly is Gjirokastra with (28,0%), followed by the district of Lezha with (27,8 ,XNUMX%)./MONITOR.AL
