Commissioner Varhelyi calls on Sofie to reflect

A few days before the European leaders hold the next meeting of the European Council and on October 6 they meet in Slovenia with the leaders of the Balkans, the pressure has increased on Bulgaria to remove the veto against North Macedonia for the negotiations, the veto that also affects the holding hostage Albania. Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhely.

President Radev said that Bulgaria expects concrete actions from the institutions of the European Union to respect the human rights of 120,000 Bulgarian citizens in the Republic of North Macedonia. Radev reminded Commissioner Varhely that the Agreement on Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation with the Republic of North Macedonia signed in 2017 is not being implemented and that hate speech is still being used in Skopje in school textbooks, museums and monuments as well as against citizens who express open their Bulgarian consciousness.

According to him, the statements and promises in the dialogue with the Republic of North Macedonia are no longer enough and Bulgaria expects clear legally binding solutions that will lead to stable and irreversible results. Commissioner Varhely will also visit North Macedonia, where he will hold meetings with the leaders of this country. Meanwhile, the European foreign ministers gathered in Brussels have discussed the ways that would open the possibility for Tirana and Skopje to hold the first intergovernmental conferences.

"Considering that we will organize a summit of the leaders of the EU and the Western Balkans, the foreign ministers debated about the reliability of our promises to this region to our partners, underlining the importance of accelerating the enlargement process. This will not be a summit for expansion, but we will also exchange views on regional economic cooperation in the Western Balkans. We hope that the dialogue between Sofia and Skopje will bring us a solution in order to approve the negotiation framework for North Macedonia", said Slovenian Secretary of State Gašper Dovžan

Commissioner Varhely's mediation comes at a time when the political crisis continues in Bulgaria, while on November 14 the third consecutive parliamentary and presidential elections will take place.
