The Russian Federation has been expelled from the Council of Europe. In a statement made by the Committee of Ministers of this Council, it was announced that after an extraordinary meeting, Russia's membership had been suspended.
This is the first time in 26 years that Russia has been expelled from the Council of Europe, writes the BBC.
The procedure to end Russia's membership first began on February 25, the day after Russian military forces, on the orders of President Putin, invaded Ukraine.
The Council is Europe's oldest political body and aims to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law across the continent.
