Volodymyr Zelensky said that if Russia kills any defenders of Mariupol or goes ahead with the independence referendum in the partially occupied southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine will suspend peace negotiations with Moscow.
"If our people are killed in Mariupol, if they announce a pseudo-referendum in the new pseudo-republics, Ukraine will not participate in any negotiation process." Zelensky said.
He went on to say that the continuation of the referendum "it will not be useful for the diplomatic solution of this situation".
"This will interfere with ending the war in the diplomatic way," he said. "This is definitely a wrong step by Russia. It proves that everything before that, all the meetings of the diplomatic groups, all this was just fiction and political theater, by the way, with very bad actors.”
