The Ukrainian MP for the port city of Odesa, Oleksiy Goncharenko, told the BBC that the Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol will not surrender to Russia.
"I spoke with them yesterday and I know they will fight until the end," he says. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the elimination of Ukrainian fighters in Mariupol would hit peace talks to end the war. Russia said it would guarantee the lives of Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered, while the Kremlin added that the only Ukrainian soldiers left in the city were in a giant steel factory.
Goncharenko said the situation in Mariupol was "a real genocide" and estimated that around 100,000 civilians were in the city. He added that "more than 20,000 people" have been killed in the besieged port city.
