The European Union has responded positively to the invitation of the president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, for a European mission to monitor the local elections in Kosovo scheduled for October 17.

In June, President Osmani asked the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, as well as the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Joseph Borrell, to send an election monitoring mission.

The Presidency has announced on August 18 that it has received the response from these two officials, in which it is stated that the European Parliament confirms its readiness to participate in the monitoring of the elections in Kosovo, while the High Representative, Borrel, will appoint the head of the mission .

"Unlike the last parliamentary elections, in which the EU Election Observation Mission was composed of a small number of experts, in the local elections of 2021, the EU will be present with a full observation mission of the elections in the Republic of Kosovo until the certification of the election result", says the announcement of the office of the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani.
The Central Election Commission has announced that 17 political entities have applied to participate in the October 94 local elections, of which 32 parties, a coalition, 35 citizen initiatives and 26 independent candidates. The spokesperson of the CEC, Valmir Elezi, has announced that the total number of candidates who have applied is 4.920, of which 165 are for mayors and 4.757 for municipal assemblies.

"High Representative Borrell has expressed confidence that the final report of the Election Observation Mission will help support the necessary future efforts for electoral reform by addressing the remaining recommendations of the EU election observation," it said in a statement. of the head of the EU office in Pristina, Tomas Szunyog.
